Presentation Design: Why Harmony, Structure, and Style Strengthen Business Presentations

At the end of each year, preparations for the coming year begin. I am often asked (and I often ask myself): "David, what do the trends for the future actually look like?" I usually answer: "It will be a surprise!" The truth behind this is: Design is a living system. It develops and moves in different directions. Every day, every week, every month.

Design is like a leaf in the wind. You never know in which direction it will move.

You can only make assumptions, but you'll never know. But what is the wind actually? How can design be changed? What gives design the ability to move? Part of the wind is technological in nature. Technological development is something that pushes design forward. In the past, there was no way to work with videos, high-resolution images, sound, animated gifs, cinematics, and many other things. Therefore, technology is something that can influence design.

In the area of premium presentations, we can certainly expect more 3D. PowerPoint now allows embedding 3D files directly. Transitions and animations will be designed much more smoothly. Almost like in a video. Smooth transitions from slide to slide (morphing) will continue to establish themselves because there is enormous potential in it.

But when I speak of design in its clarity, it will develop in a direction that is lived differently in some industries. It is the time of authentic design. But what actually is authenticity?

My commute to work is 45 minutes each way. This time belongs to me. I use this time to listen to audiobooks. Audiobooks that are narrated by the authors themselves. Because of this, they are authentic. These books were written and spoken by them. They are reproduced exactly as they were created. That is authenticity.

As a reader, you will notice this text is different. It is in my style of speech. You can hear me through the lines. However, this text has been adapted, as I am not a native speaker. This is authentic to me:

With the metaphor of the wind and the leaf, I wanted to show from the beginning that in our new society, the Generation Y and others still to come, more and more authenticity is desired. And this also applies to language, design, and photos.

The time of cliché and standard images is over. More and more image databases employ photographers who produce authentic imagery. More and more websites are replacing standard images with real images of their employees. It is increasingly moving into the Instagram style. Young, strong, less posed. If a standard image is used, it is edited so that it does not look standard. Image databases have already noticed the trend - and so have we.

We want to be authentic. We want the “WOW!”. We want something different. And we want the surprise!

An interesting development is the connection of design and competence. Like the combination of design and a story. Or design and the approach to sustainability. Thoughtful design, which we are already able to experience in some industries. Design will also come from a mix in the future.

Clear, authentic, crazy. The battle between harmony and classic that combines into something extraordinary. What is to be expected in presentation design? An intensified collaboration between slides and speaker. Through authentic design, the understanding of the speaker will change. Through authentic presentations, language and communication will change. Is that all? No. But what's to come is a surprise.
